Wacky in a bad way. They get you with the dramatic life and death war love story but bore you with cheap characters and horrendous dialogue.
For starters, I didn’t particularly find John and Savannah’s meet cute to be that interesting mainly cause I find it ridiculous. You meet a guy cause he readily flings his body off a pier to rescue your purse (army boy), and immediately you feel the need to invite him to your house. I mean after all he is shirtless. I think I was just expecting a little more? The absent build up for these characters made it seem like it was set up to be a love at first sight thing but the connection just wasn’t there for me. I do commend the attempt at additional elements throughout for a multi layered story but this did not really help when deciphering our characters motives. Mute the audio, throw in a voice over of something entirely different. The problem is that the story has good bones but a plastic exterior.
John is a dense character. He unfortunately stays dense. And I unfortunately do not have the Channing Tatum itch. Savannah has big dreams paired with a big heart and absolutely no substance. She is afraid to curse. The two compete for who can deliver the worst line. Why is everyone in this movie either dying or an air head?
I don’t completely hate this movie there were a few scenes that had heart. I enjoyed the John homecoming scene, all of that was great. Savannah screaming John’s name as she runs through the airport then leaping into his arms while all old men around watch in heartwarming envy. Very sweet, I almost cried. Feeling the urge to practice calligraphy.
